Why am I getting an "attribute needs to be set" error when instantiating a work item template?

When trying to create the Plan from the Eclipse client, I get the following error:

Cannot create work items specified by the template. 'Save Work Item' failed Preconditions have not been met: The 'Other Plan' attribute needs to be set (work item <11:22:30>).

Since I am not aware of a standard "Other Plan" attribute, I assume this is a custom attribute added in your process specification, and that this attribute has been declared to be "required" for one of the work item types in the work item template.
