Project Area Membership versus Team Area membership
I've been using the tool a while, and this is likely therefore a little late in the day to be asking.
Does a user have to be a member of both the project area and team area ? I seem to recall in the PoT, that student1 thru xxx were only members of specific team areas and not the overall project area
so when I'm adding a user to a project - I presumably only have to add them to a team area right and not the project top level too ?

One answer
Your presumption is correct...in general you do not have to add them to
both.
