What's the relationship between an “impediment” and a blocked work item?

I’m confused about the relationship between an “impediment” and a blocked work item.  How do I mark a work item as blocked and how to I link it to the impediment blocking it?

impediment to me is some external problem..  like no funds, or vendor availability.. which are not directly  the normal workitems.. (stories, tasks, etc).

while blocks/depends on are linkages between  other similar workitems.

this story blocks another,
or this task depends on completion of that task.

Can you elaborate upon the second part of the question "How do I mark a work item as blocked and how to I link it to the impediment blocking it?"

Sure. In the links section of a workitem, add a  Depends on link with another workitem on the other end.

So this workitem depends on the impediment

workitem A depends on workitem B.   from B's perspective, it 'Blocks' A,
while A shows it 'Depends on B

A does not show blocked when you look at it.
