Assign a task to multiple people

Corby James (5166) | asked Feb 20 '09, 12:43 p.m.
I have a task that I want to assign to multiple people. I may be missing something obvious, but is there any way to do this without creating work items for each individual that duplicate the task?

If you assigned a task to multiple people, whose work-load should the
estimated time of that task be assigned to?

Cheers,
Geoff

So let me ask a different way...I have a task - "set up personal development environment" that everyone on the team has to complete. Of course I can create the same task n times and assign to different people, but I'm looking for a better, more usable way.

One lightweight way to do this is to create a single "set-up your
environement" task, and then add an "approval" for that task for each
member of your team. That's the way we handle things like signing off
on a test pass.

Has anything changed with this issue?  I'd like to assign a work item to multiple people.   That way, whoever is available and looking for their next work item can claim the work item and resolve it.   If I assign the work item to one person, that person may be unavailable or working on something else.

As far as the 'time tracking' aspect of it, we don't use the time estimating or tracking features of RTC, so the question of what person to assign the estimated time load to is moot to me.

Nothing has changed. A work item can still be assigned to only one person.

If you are looking for a way to have a pool of work items that people can choose from, you should come up with some convention for how to specify such work items. For example, the work items could be owned by a special functional user, or they could be planned for some special iteration, or you could use a particular tag, or define a new custom attribute to control that. Then create and share a query that selects all those work items. Someone looking for work would run the query and pick a work item from the result.
