How to create an installation update site for RTC

Paul Romanus (3355) | asked Sep 08 '08, 11:50 a.m.
Hi, how do you go about creating an installation manager update site?

We want to be able to control the version of the client on our client machines, however I can't see any sign of the packaging utility that I've used previously nor any way to download the ibm installation manager packaging utility.

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,

The packaging utility is not currently bundled with RTC. However, if
you already have the packaging utility installed and the RTC DVD media,
you can point it at the 'diskTag.inf' and copy the client package from
there.

If you are missing either of those pieces, it is still fairly simple to
accomplish what you want with the downloads that are available. The
easiest way would be to go to the 'All Downloads' tab on the downloads
page on jazz.net and download the installation manager 'Client (Local
Install)' for whatever platform(s) you need. Just unzip it to whatever
location you like. You can start the installation manager and add a
repository location which points to the 'diskTag.inf' located in the
'rtc' directory (the top-level directory) to install from that location.

Thanks James, I can now add the update site to installation manager.

However, we're responsible for the installation of RTC on potentially 2000 developers' machines. What we want to do is package the installation as a silent install and pre-configure the repository location to our local site, removing the default jazz.net site.

Is there any way to do this - from memory, I thought this is what the package util allowed an admin to do, however I can't find a standalone version of the package util - only fix packs.

Cheers

The packaging utility only allows you to manage your own local
repositories by copying packages to them and deleting packages from them
as desired.

However, the installation manager provides silent install capabilities
which should allow you to accomplish what you want. Assuming that the
users already have an installation manager on their system, once you
have created your local im repository containing the rtc client, all you
need is a response file to drive the silent install from it.

Information on response files and how to create them (including using
the 'record' capabilities of IM) can be found in the installation
manager infocenter, located here:
