Is it possible to link created Work Items with Iterations

Hello,
Is it possible to link created Work Items with Iterations already in the process template?
Also it seems to be impossible to merge several development lines at a special time.
So this means in the end, that only a sequential process can be displayed with one line...
With more lines you can create parallel workflow, but they cannot be merged in the end!?
Is this intended, or is it a feature , which is not implemented yet?
Im thankful for each reply.
Regards, Sebastian.

The values that you see in the work item editor's 'Planned For' drop
down are iterations that are defined for the project area the work item
is associated with. These iterations are marked with 'A release is
scheduled for this iteration'. Otherwise the work item editor ignores them.

Development lines do not have merge support. Thus, when work produced in
two different development lines is merged and one of the development
lines is discontinued, this information is not visible in the Process
Iterations section of the project area editor. However, this does not
hamper the capability to merge the work of the two development lines by
merging the content of the relevant SCM streams etc.
