Is it possible to convert an older attribute to use a Role-Based User List or do they have to be new attributes?

I have a Developer drop down list field from 2.0 and after defining a Role-Based User List in 3.0 that contains everyone with the Developer role, I can't figure out how to implement it with our existing attribute.

I did get it to work with a new attribute.
