Lifecycle workflow customisation

In RAM all asset types by default have a lifecycle associated. Can this be switched off for certain asset types? Currently we have created a custom lifecycle with no states to get around this. What is the recomended aproach? We are modeling a heirarchy of assets so its only the top level asset that actually requires a lifecycle with states.

All assets require lifecycles, even if there is one state.
