C/ALM with RTC / RQM / RTC on the same server

Adil Chahid (45524118) | asked May 01 '10, 11:35 p.m.
Hi all,
It seems that is is not supported and C/ALM between RTC, RQM or RRC residing on the same server.
Should it support to work fine if each one of the products is installed in its own JVM (Websphere Profile)?
Does the C/LAM mechanism uses the hostname as defined in the hosts file?
Please advise.

Hi,

as far as my knowledge goes currently it is suggested to use seperate host for the servers. It is essential that every server has its own host name which is used in the URI Root. The host name should be defined in a DNS cnfiguration. For demo and testing the hosts file would be good enough. For production I would suggest DNS. A dedicated host name like rqm.example.com also helps with migrating to a different hardware later, preserving the CALM links between the repositories.

Some of the reasons behind that are related to OAuth and Coockie handling.

But note that having RTC/RQM/RRC running out-of-the-box on the same host
is a high priority task for 3.0.

Hi,

we're tracking this issue in story
https://jazz.net/jazz/resource/itemName/com.ibm.team.workitem.WorkItem/99077

You can configure both products to be run on the same machine already. The
configuration process is a not simple and we're working on an
out-of-the-box install. However, if you want to install them already,
follow the steps described here:

https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/CALMRTCRQMSmokeInstall

We're using these configuration steps for our smoke-tests.

HTH,
Jan.

I was very disappointed to find this isn't supported yet. I sort of expected it would be by now.

The smoke test story covers the tomcat case. How about the Websphere case?

To explain - I'm trying to run as much of this kit on my single laptop for demo purposes. I did manage to get RTC running in the eWas shipped in ClearCase 7.1.1.

Aside: The install instructions for getting RTC 2.0.0.2 set up in WAS leave out a lot of stuff I had to find in technotes and tech tips. These were helpful and should really be referenced in the install instructions:
http://jazz.net/library/techtip/97
http://jazz.net/library/techtip/321

The next problem - I'd REALLY like to be able to put RQM in there too but I'm going to give up for now I think?

In the meantime can I have RTC in WAS and RQM in Tomcat on one machine?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

you can have all products on your machine in different app servers. You have to make sure to give each application its own host name and set the URI roots accordingly to make the integrations work.

Just for your information I am currently running all three products that way. We just don't suggest this setup for production at customers for several reasons. A colleague set up two products on one Tomcat successfully recently, so it can be done but it is not easy and I'd suggest to wait until the issues are solved.

FYI: I run on tomcat and with derby (RTC, RQM, RRC and any combination of them) for demos and experiments. This is very convenient for me. I have a small bunch of batch files that automate the process of setting up tomcat and the repositories. Switching setups for different scenarios even with different sets of tools is just a matter of waiting 2-3 minutes for the shutdown, copy and startup process to finish. It works well enough on my laptop.

Hi Ralph,
Yes I picked up the URI point. Thanks for confirming it should work. I'll persist.

I like the concept you described for the switching etc. I did something manually along those lines previously.

Regards,
Mark
