I doubt it. 


I would mark the related sections as final. Then you can try in. I believe if you use the UI you will be prevented by the final, which indicates you would override.

There is something that has been created to allow some adjustment without completely loosing the connection. This is described here: https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/ConfigurationDataDeltaUserDoc#Fine_grained_Customization_of_Co 
I am not sure if you can use that for the icons.

I am also wondering if the change of an icon is worth the effort.

You are right. No fine-grained customization is defined for icons yet.
