Count items in a component programmatically

We need to calculate the number of the items stored in every component of our RTC environment programmatically. We have a lot of large components and, for this reason,  we are not able to load every component to filesystem.
Any suggestion?

Note, walking the tree in a component in the repository workspace allows counting and does not require loading the content to disc.
