Should owners or creators of work items receive email notification of pending approvals, even if they are NOT listed as an approver?

Creators and owners of work items are receiving emails DAILY of pending approvals even if they are not listed on any approvals for that work item.  Is this expected behavior?  If so, how can it be turned off?  There isn't an obvious selection in Mail Preferences.

Which version of RTC?
When stating "mail preferences" does this mean the settings for each individual user?
WIthin the user profile, there should be a section titled approvers" or something like that.  What options have been checked?
