When I alter a change set description, is there any way to update the associated comments in the Work Item?

Consider this workflow:
1. Create a change set
2. Supply a description for the change set
3. Associate change set with Work Item, as per department process

This results in a Work Item comment that includes the Change Set description. But if I perform 2. and 3. the other way around, I get a comment with no description, and it does not update when I later add ( or edit ) the description of the change set.

Similarly, if I later decide to move one or more change sets and associate them with a different Work Item, the comments remain in the original Work Item.

I guess that comments are intended to be a static record of what has happened to the Work Item. However, in our department we find that comments are not an ideal vehicle for exposing the association between a Work Item and a Change Set. The associations often change, for good reasons, and the comments are then inaccurate or misleading.

Is there a workaround for this?

Hello Tim,

I don't believe there is a workaround for changing the comments added to work items for the association/dis-association of change sets.  Is the links section of a workitem sufficient to provide the change set association information?  The  change set comments shown here will update when they are changed on the change set itself.

It does sound like the "Work Item Audit Trail for Change Set Links" follow-up action and Save Change Set Links and Comments (server) could be enhanced to warn the user that there is no comment on the change set.  Please consider opening an enhancement request for this if you believe it will help in your workflow.
