Customizing the Work Item header in editor

Development team,

I tried to search but was not sure what to search on, so apologies if this is a duplicate.

We're creating a custom Work Item type to represent an APAR and one of the bits of feedback we've had is that in the header in the top left of the Work Item editor shows the Work Item name (in this case 'APAR') followed by the work item id which is a number. This is in a control with an arrow that brings up a context menu.

What we'd like is to be able to specify an attribute that would be used, instead of just using the ID. This would be used both in the RTC client as well as the Web client for that editor. It would be on a per editor basis, and would have to be specified.

In our case we'd specify that the APAR number field is used (a custom attribute). Therefore instead of just having 'APAR 234' in the top left which doesn't really give much useful information to the end user, we'd have for example: 'APAR PK12345 (234)'.

This way the important data is there (the APAR number) but the id is also displayed.

I was thinking that a place to put this property would be in the 'Editor Presentations' tab in the Work Item configuration data.

What are your thoughts? Can we raise an enhancement against 2.0? It would be great to get this included if possible. I know it sounds odd, but for our end users the main information they want to see on a per work item basis is the APAR number, the id is irrelevant to them.

Many thanks,
Dan Rivett

PS I've got a mockup image that I can attach if I raise a work item.

In the most recent (M2a) build, there is a new feature that lets you
customize the header of a workitem display. I know it works with the
Eclipse display (saw it demo'ed) ... not sure about the WebUI. I'd
suggest trying out the M2a build, and see if it is flexible enough to do
what you want.

Cheers,
Geoff

Hi Dan
The part you are referring to is the title. This is currently not customizable. What is customizable (in both the web and the eclipse UI) is the header that is just below the title (including summary field and workflow combos).

Please feel free to file an enhancement request against the Work Items category.

Thanks Marcel, I've created enhancement 74948 to track it.

If it's possible to get it in plan it would be great as this usability item was top of our list by a long shot with my team and other teams who are going to use the APAR type.

Sorry, I am still a little confused by this thread. I understand that you can edit the existing Editor Header by unlocking it, but is it currently possible in RTC 2.0 to create two presentation editors that use different Editor Header/Header Section layouts? Or must all presentations use the same Header?

Really, what I am trying to do is make the Resolution and Workflow State items in the header section read only so that the state and resolution of a subset of the work item types can't be changed in the GUI. (only the CQ Connector can change the state of the items)

Hi
Yes, you can do that for example by removing the header for a certain editor and then adding one without reusing an existing section, but by creating a new section. In that header section, you can add the presentations that you like.
E.g. in the scrum template of RTC 2.0, we use two different headers, one with a resolution field for defect, and one with only the state field for work item types that have not resolution on their workflow.

Be aware that (as far as I know) the Workflow State and Resolution presentation can not be shown readonly (not yet supported). Feel free to file an enhancement request for that.
