Story points and progress tracking
There are no increments in 'story points' that would show 'in iteration 1 this story has achieved 3 points, out of 5 remaining' - it is either all or nothing. One has to resolve a story in order to show a progress. However, some stories are very heavy and need to span across multiple iterations. Plans don't show progress on such stories during all that time.
Since story points is not a universal denominator across all work item types (only story has that attribute), many teams end up making lots of small story work items, each fitting into 1 iteration all for the sake of showing progress increments. Is there a way to configure planning complexity to show stories progressing over a span of multiple iterations, without actually resolving Story work item ? |

Hi Natalia,
Agile methodologies recommend breaking down user stories so they can be fit into one iteration, so our user stories in RTC are designed to follow this process. They are either complete or incomplete. I don't know of a way to mark a user story as partially completed in RTC. http://www.mountaingoatsoftware.com/topics/user-stories has some explanation about breaking large user stories (epics) into smaller user stories in the examples section. What you can do to show progress is to create a large user story and then break it down into child user stories. When you estimate the child user stories, the story points in the parent user story will be the sum of the story points estimated in the child user stories. As you complete the child user stories, the parent user story will show the progress. For example, a parent story would automatically go from 0/10 story points completed to 2/10 story points completed when a child story estimated at 2 points is marked as completed.
