What is Continuous Engineering?

Many teams creating smart and connected products struggle with outdated, siloed, waterfall engineering practices. Each added layer of complexity leads to more problems and unscheduled rework when components are integrated. Maintaining quality in the face of ever shortening development cycle times is challenging enough; improving quality, or reducing development time or effort may seem beyond reach. The Internet of Things (IoT) makes the situation worse and demands a fresh approach to product engineering that is designed for the 'closed loop' of IoT product development.

Continuous engineering includes practices for achieving more agile, sustainable engineering improvements in this new age:

  • Engineering insight: use integrated tools and lightweight data integration to break down the siloes of information that can prevent project teams from making rapid, optimal design decisions that continuously drive the design in the right direction.
  • Continuous verification: shift traditional end-of-cycle verification (and validation) as early as possible, and repeat them often to build in quality from the beginning.
  • Strategic reuse: intelligently reuse product engineering artifacts; go beyond "clone and own" approaches and make use of true configuration management within and across engineering tools. Implement product line engineering to maximize your reuse potential.

What others are saying

Because no engineer or tool is an island: Jazz and Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC)

We work with teams of engineers to help them meet their key challenges in smart and connected systems development and delivery. These challenges include collaborating within and across disciplines, implementing workflow processes, effectively managing changing requirements, achieving compliance, and meeting demands to reduce development costs and time to market.

To address these challenges and more, we offer an engineering platform built on the Jazz integration platform and make use of Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration. Our tools provide a development lifecycle solution, the means to implement guidance for best practices, enhanced traceability and greater information visibility across tools and the engineering disciplines that use them.

We are enabling systems engineering and embedded software best practices through workflow integrations across requirements management, modeling, simulation, quality management, work tracking and planning, change management, and engineering lifecycle management.

Five core tools in this platform include IBM Rational DOORS Next Generation, IBM Rational Rhapsody, IBM Rational Team Concert, IBM Rational Quality Manager, and IBM Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager. Our clients often deploy these tools in larger solutions, for example with IBM Rational DOORS, IBM Rational ClearCase and ClearQuest, and with tools provided by our many business partners.
