Workaround: Web screen capture tool fails

Workaround Summary

In the web client of IBM Rational Team Concert, the screen capture tool does not work in two situations: when you use Firefox 3.6 on Linux with GTK, and when you use a 64-bit Java virtual machine (JVM).

More Information

In the web client, you can start the screen capture tool by pressing the screen capture button on the work item editor page. The screen capture button starts a Java applet that handles the screen capture. The applet is run in a Java launcher that is hosted by a JVM.

The screen capture tool does not work in the following situations:

  • When you start the tool from Firefox 3.6 on Linux with GTK.
  • When you start the tool in web browser that is configured to use a 64-bit JVM, such as the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 9.

Problem: Screen capture tool fails in Firefox 3.6 on Linux with GTK

When you use Firefox 3.6 on Linux with GTK, a Linux GUI toolkit, the screen capture tool does not work properly.

Workaround for Firefox with GTK issue

To use the screen capture tool on Linux with GTK, use Firefox 10 or later.

Problem: Screen capture tool fails in web browsers that use a 64-bit JVM

If your operating system uses a 64-bit JVM, the screen capture tool might fail to start. For example, when the tool is started from the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7, a 64-bit JVM is used and the tool does not start. The tool requires a 32-bit JVM to operate properly.

JVMs are installed with your operating system to enable Java programs to run. You might need to install or reconfigure your JVM to work with the screen capture tool.

Workaround for 64-bit JVM issue

To work around this issue, depending on your configuration, do one of these actions:

  • If you use a Windows 7 system, use Firefox or the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 9. If you have the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 9 installed, you can start the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 9 from the Windows Start menu.
  • If your configuration does not have a JVM installed and the operating system prompts you to select a version of a JVM to install, install the 32-bit version.
  • Use a different screen capture tool. By using a tool such as the Preview tool, capture a screen or selection. Save the screen capture to a file, and then attach the screen capture to the work item on the Links tab of the work item editor. For best usability, save screen captures in .png or .jpg format.
