Workaround: IBM Installation Manager on Windows Server 2008 crashes after a series of installation operations because of memory errors

Summary

IBM Installation Manager on Windows Server 2008 crashes after a series of installation operations because of memory errors.

More Information

Problem
If you use Installation Manager V1.5.2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and perform a series of installation and uninstallation operations without restarting Installation Manager, eventually Installation Manager crashes.  The crash occurs because of Java “Out of Memory” exceptions.

Workaround
Edit the IBMIM.ini configuration file and provide a specific value for the Installation Manager heap usage:

1.  If Installation Manager is running, shut down the program.

2.  Find the IBMIM.ini configuration file in the directory where Installation Manager is installed.  By default on Windows systems, the file is in this directory:

C:Program Files (x86)IBMInstallation ManagereclipseIBMIM.ini

3. Open the file for editing, and after the -vmargs line, add a new line and type -Xmx512m.  The following screen capture shows an example of this change.

4. Restart Installation Manager and continue completing installation and uninstallation tasks.
