Importing ontologies

You can import profiles, profile projects, and Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) Ecore models that contain the vocabulary that your organization requires for its projects. These artifacts are imported as ontologies, which you can associate with domains.

Before you begin

You must have JazzAdmins privileges in Design Management. You must have access to the EMF Ecore file or archive file that contain the profiles or profile projects to import. These files must be located locally on your computer.

About this task

An ontology defines the vocabulary, such as the classes and properties, that a domain uses. Classes describe the concepts of a domain, and properties define the relationships between the concepts. Ontologies can be used by multiple domains.
Note: This topic applies to Rational® Software Architect Design Management only. You cannot perform this task with Rational Rhapsody® Design Manager.

  1. Open the Domains project area: Click the Home icon and under Design Management, click Domains.
  2. On the main toolbar, click Import; then select the option that corresponds with the type of file to import.
  3. On the Profiles to import header, click Add.
  4. Browse to the location of the file to import.
  5. Optional: Specify whether to overwrite existing ontology information.
  6. Specify any path map variables that you use in your stream. The server has no file system, so the value of a path map must be relative to the stream path.
  7. In the upper right of the page, click Import.

What to do next

You can view the imported ontology in the Explorer view of the Domains project area. You can now add the imported ontology to one or more domains.
