Creating, modifying, and moving work items in a plan

In addition to modifying work items in the work item editor, you can create, modify, and move work items in the Planned Items page of a plan. Using the Planned Items page in a plan is more convenient because you do not have to open each work item in the work item editor to modify and save its details.

Before you begin

To view the work item in a plan, the work item's Planned For and Filed Against attributes must match the plan's configuration.
Note: Dragging and dropping work items is not supported in projects that use the Formal Project Management Process template.

About this task

The table describes the tasks you can do with the work items in a plan:
Table 1. Modifying work items in a plan
To Do
Modify a work item in the work item editor Click the work item.
Modify a work item in a plan Hover the mouse pointer over the Actions column of the work item, and click the down arrow. Click the Edit Work Item icon (Edit Work Item). After modifying the work item, click Save and Close.
Demote or promote a work item Hover the mouse pointer over the Actions column of the work item, and click the down arrow. Click the Demote icon (Demote) to demote a work item. You can promote only demoted work items, by clicking the Promote icon (Promote). The promote and demote actions are only available for parent-child relationships in the Tree view.
Move work items in a plan In the Actions column, select one or more work items to move. Then, at the target work item, click the down arrow in the Actions column, and click the Move Above icon (Move Above), the Move Below icon (Move Below), or the Move Into icon (Move Into). The work items are moved to the new location.
Note: The Move action is not available for Kanban or Taskboard views.
Drag and drop work items in a plan Hover the mouse pointer over the Actions columns of the work item until you get a cross-hair, then do one of the following:
  • Drag and drop the work item to the new location.
  • Drag and drop a work item on another work item. (You must set the Display option to Tree in the plan view.) The work item link created is consistent with the link type of the hierarchical tree display in the plan view. For example, when a tree display is configured for relationships, such as Tracks > Contributes To, a work item that is dragged to that plan view also has that link type.
  • Drag and drop a linked work item between two work items. The work item displays as a sibling.
  • Drag and drop a linked work item to a group. The work item displays as a sibling under the new group.

You cannot drag work items under out-of-plan work items.

Note: Automatic scrolling is enabled when the cursor is near the bottom of the plan editor, displaying any subsequent work items. After scrolling down, you can move the cursor to the top of the plan editor to automatically scroll to the preceding work items.
Drag and drop work items between plans Hover the mouse pointer over the Actions columns of the work item until you get a cross-hair, then drag the work item and drop it between two plans on separate browser windows, where both plans are under the same project area.
Create a work item In the Planned Items tab, click the Add Work Item icon (Add Work Item), and select the work item type. Enter the work item details, and click Save. Or click the down arrow in the Actions column, click the Create Work Item icon (Create Work Item), and then select the work item type. Enter the work item details and click Save.
Create a linked work item In the Actions column of the work item to link, click the down arrow, click the link type, such as Create Depends On Work Item, and then choose a work item type.
Add a link to a work item Click the down arrow in the Actions column, click the Add Link icon (Add Link), and then choose a linking option. For example, you can link a parent or child work item or related test plans and test cases.
Delete a draft work item Hover the mouse pointer over the actions column of the work item, and click Delete Draft Item (Delete Draft Item).
Refresh one or more work items In the Actions column, select one or more work items that you want to refresh. Click the down arrow of one of the work items, and then click Refresh work item (Refresh work item).
Important: In the web client, items is a plan that are displayed in tree views load differently depending on which advanced properties are set. For example, if you enable the Fetch Outplaced Children On Demand property, items that do not belong to the plan are displayed only when their related items in the plan are expanded or selected.
You can drag and drop work items on the Planned Items page to modify work items. For example, you can change the owner of the work item by dragging the work item to a different team member group.
Important: Web browsers must support HTML 5 for the drag-and-drop feature to work. Mozilla Firefox 3.6.28 is supported in Rational Team Concert™, version 4.0.
