Setting user preferences for quality management

You can optimize settings for quality management in the Preferences window.

  1. Click the User Profile (User Profile menu); then click My Preferences for Quality Management.
  2. Optional: You can hide tabs for resources that you viewed previously. Instead, a single page layout is displayed, which presents the look and feel of other Engineering Lifecycle Management applications that integrate with IBM® Engineering Test Management. You can use the capability menus to navigate to the last 20 recently viewed resources.

To hide resource tabs, click Page Tab Layouts; then select Do not use tabs in the page layout.

  3. Optional: You can set a preference to discover and repair missing back links, on the Quality Management application-side, in the Browse Test Plan or Browse Test Case pages.
A back link is a link that is automatically created in a target application after you create a link to external artifacts in an Engineering Lifecycle Management workbench source application. A back link is missing when there is one forward link from a Quality Management application test artifact to a requirement or development artifact, but there is no link from the requirement or development artifact to the test artifact. The following back link types are supported for repair operations:
    • validatedBy links from a requirement to a test case
    • validatedBy links from a requirement collection to a test plan
    • testedBy links from a development item to a test case
    • testedBy links from a development plan to a test plan
    • If configuration management is enabled for your project, the current configuration must be a global configuration to link to artifacts such as requirements or development plans in other Engineering Lifecycle Management applications.
    • If you have not enabled configuration management, when you create a link to external artifacts in a ELM application, a link is automatically created back to the source artifact in the target application, which is called a back link. However, the synchronization between bidirectional links and the traceability between source and target artifacts are not guaranteed.

To enable automatic discovery of missing back links, click List Views; then select Show back link status on the Browse Test Plans and Browse Test Cases pages when traceability columns are shown.

When a source artifact and target artifact link to each other, this is known as bidirectional linking. The source and target applications store their links in separate databases, and the source application does not have access to the database in the target application. Certain transactional operations, such as when artifacts are copied or deleted, can occur on the source application server. In these cases, corresponding back links in artifacts in the target application are not automatically added or removed. Also, instances occur where back links are intentionally removed from the target application without removing the corresponding link from the source application. As a result, if bidirectional links are not in a state of synchronization, traceability between the source and target artifacts can appear different based on your starting viewpoint.
Once the preference is saved, when you open a Browse Test Plans or Browse Test Cases list view and select the Traceability view, the Quality Management application automatically searches for broken back links and displays a broken link icon for the listed external artifact. You can then repair the broken back link by clicking the icon, and then selecting Repair Link.
  4. Set additional preferences as needed.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Optional: The supported table list views in the user preferences uses the default query that is set in the project property. You can override the settings to not have a default query, or you can select another saved query, including both shared and personal queries with the List View Queries property.

Preferences are saved to the user profile. Most settings are not active until the next time you log in.
