Recording test results without execution

In some cases, you might want to record a result for a test without stepping through a manual test or running an automated test script. This option is available for test cases, test suites, test case execution records, and test suite execution records.

About this task

The Create Result without Execution option may be useful in these types of situations:
  • Your team may have many simple test cases that testers already know how to run and that do not require them to follow manual test steps. If the tester runs these test cases without stepping through the scripts in Engineering Test Management, they can then use the Create Result without Execution option to record the results.
  • A tester may discover a blocking defect while they are running a test case and they know that it will impact several other test cases. In this case, they can use the Create Result without Execution option to create results for the other test cases and add the defect to them without manually executing each test case.

Procedure

To record results without execution:

  1. Select the artifacts for which you want to record results:
    • Test case: Select a test case from the Browse Test Cases page, or from the Test Cases section of a test plan. Click the Run (Run) icon and then select Create Result without Execution in the Run Test Case window.
    • Test suite: Select a test suite from the Browse Test Suites page, or from the Test Suites section of a test plan. Click the Run (Run) icon and then select Create Result without Execution in the Run Test Case window.
    • Test case execution record: Select a test case execution record, or multiple test case execution records, from the Browse Test Case Execution Records page, or from the Test Case Execution Records section of a test case. Click the arrow next to the Run (Run Dropdown arrow) icon and select Create Result without Execution.
    • Test suite execution record: Select a test suite execution record from the Browse Test Suite Execution Records page, or from the Test Suite Execution Records section of a test suite. Click the Run (Run) icon and select Create Result without Execution in the Run Test Suite window.
  2. Depending on the artifact that you have selected, do one of these things:
    • For test cases and test suites, specify the test case execution record and planning information. Optionally, specify the test script, test machine, test cell, and build record. In the Set Verdict of the Result as list, select a verdict.
    • For test suite execution records, select the test cases for which you want to record a verdict, and optionally specify a build record. In the Set Verdict of the Result as list, select a verdict.
    • For test case execution records, optionally add notes related to the execution, link to defects and build records, and use the sliders to distribute points. In the Verdict list, select a verdict.
  3. Optional: To select the data records to be recorded with the result, complete the following steps:
    1. Select the Select Records from Test Data check box.
    2. Click Next.
    3. Select records to be recorded with the result.

You can adjust values in the Record Selection Criteria section to show a subset of the test data, or clear the fields to show all records.

  4. Click OK or Finish. The Execution Result page opens.
