Creating and viewing test execution schedules

An execution schedule is a series of tasks, or steps, that can be run sequentially at a scheduled time. An execution schedule can also be tasks that run when they are triggered by an event such as a build completion.

Before you begin

To create and edit an execution schedule, you must log in as a user with Save Execution Sequence permissions. To create and edit the scheduling method of an execution schedule (step 5), you must log in as a user with Schedule Job permissions. For more information about project area permissions, see Quality Management role-based permissions.

About this task

Execution schedules are reusable. You can direct that schedules run at specified times or have events trigger schedules. You can also select the machines or test cells on which to run the schedules.

Procedure

To create an execution schedule:

  1. In the main menu, click Execution > Create > Execution Schedule. The Create Execution editor opens.
  2. Click Enter New Execution Schedule Name, and type a name for the execution schedule.
  3. In the Owner list, select the name of the person who is responsible for this execution schedule.
  4. Click Click here to enter a description, and type a description of the execution schedule.
  5. In the Overview section, select an event to initiate the execution schedule from these options:
    • Date and time: Select this option to enter a date and time to run the execution schedule.
    • Build completion: Select this option to initiate the execution schedule when a notification is received that a product build is complete and ready for testing. In Select build, enter the name of the build definition for the build to initiate the execution schedule. In Start execution schedule based on build status, enter the build status that is required to run the execution schedule.
    • Not Scheduled Yet: Select this option to indicate that the execution schedule should not be run yet.
  6. To use a test cell to run the execution schedule, click the Select test cell icon (Test cell). The Select Test Cell window opens with a list of available test cells. If the Search Runtime option for adapter selection is selected, then the adapter searches within the specified test cell. Also, if a test cell is associated with a tests suite for a test suite execution record step, then that step overrides the test cell associated at the execution schedule level.
  7. Select the test cell you need, and click OK.
  8. Optional: Select a channel. If a channel is selected, only Test Case and Test Suite Execution Records that are related to it will appear in the Steps section.
  9. In Steps, click the Add step icon (Add) to create the steps of the execution schedule. You can use one or a combination of any of the types of steps that are described here.
    • Select Add Test Suite Execution Record to add test suite execution records to run. A list of available test suite execution records is displayed. Select one or more test suite execution records, and then click OK. Each test suite execution record that you selected is displayed as a step.
    • Select Add Test Case Execution Record to add test case execution records to run. A list of available test case execution records is displayed. Select one or more test case execution records, and click OK. Each test case execution record that you select is displayed as a step.
    • Select Automation to add automated scripts to run and to select the lab resources on which to run the scripts. A list of available automations and machines is displayed. Select one or more automations and machines on which to run scripts, and click OK. Each automation that you selected is displayed as a step. To edit script parameters, click the Edit icon (Edit). The Properties window opens and displays all the script properties. Edit the properties as needed, and then click OK.
When you select a step, details about the step are displayed.
  10. Click Save.
