Creating project areas

You can create a project area in a repository to manage the project deliverables, team structure, process, and schedule.

Before you begin

If you are creating project areas in multiple applications, such as change and configuration management, quality management, and requirements management, and you want to associate these project areas with each other, consider creating a lifecycle project. A lifecycle project groups multiple project areas and provides a central location from which you can manage members of the project areas. See Administering lifecycle projects for details.

You must be a member of either the JazzProjectAdmins group or the JazzAdmins group. Log in to the repository connection before performing the following task.

About this task

When you create a project area, you must specify a process template. A process template provides a new project area with an initial process configuration and iteration structure. You can use one of the predefined process templates, or you can use a process template that your team has created or has been imported into the repository.

Procedure

  1. Right-click a repository connection in the Team Artifacts view and select New > Project Area.
  2. In the Create Project Area window, enter a name and optional summary for the project area and click Next.
  3. If your team does not have custom process templates in the repository, click the Deploy Templates button to deploy the predefined templates to the repository.
    Attention: If you upgrade from a previous release, deploying templates overwrites the previous versions of those templates. If you have customized the templates and want to preserve those customizations, open the templates in the Process Template editor; change their IDs and names; and save them before you deploy the new predefined templates.
  4. To see only templates that are available for a specific locale, select the locale from the list and select Filter by locale. These locales are only available if the repository contains locale-specific templates. Select one of the process templates.
    Note: A project area can make its process available to other project areas by sharing its process. If the new project area will consume the shared process of another project area, select the Unconfigured Process template.
  5. Click Finish. The project area Overview tab opens in the Project Area editor.
  6. Add an optional description for the project. If you created the project area with the Unconfigured Process template, select Use the process configuration from another project area for this project area in the Process Sharing section; click Change in the Project Area field; and select the project area whose process you want to use. Click Save.

What to do next

Now that you have created the project area, you can add members and administrators to it. When you add members, you assign roles to them. Each role has a set of permissions, which indicate which operations the user can perform within the project area. You can also add iterations to the project area and create team areas. If the application is configured to support cross-application communication, you can configure links to project areas in other applications so that users can create links from artifacts in the local project area to artifacts in the project area in the target application. To enable linking, add associations to the project area.
