Configuring widgets

You can edit the preferences of a widget to control its content, scope, and appearance.

About this task

When you add a widget to the dashboard, it has a set of default settings and characteristics that you can modify.

Customizing the widget settings

About this task

Most widgets in the dashboard can be configured by specifying settings, such as Query, Results per page, and URL. The settings determine the information that is displayed in the widget, either explicitly or by generating results that are based on values in the settings. The settings that are available for configuration are widget-dependent.

Procedure

  1. To edit the settings, open the widget menu, and click Settings.
  2. Modify the settings, click OK, and then click Save to store them and return to the normal display state.

Editing the content of a widget

About this task

You can directly edit the content of some widgets (for example, Bookmarks or HTML). If the content of a widget is editable, the Edit Contents icon (Edit contents) is displayed in the widget title bar.

Procedure

  1. To directly edit the content, click Edit Content from the widget menu, or click the Edit icon (Edit) in the widget title bar. The actual editing steps are dependent on the widget design. For example, you can directly edit an HTML widget with markup.
  2. When you are done changing the content, click OK, and then click Save to store the content and return to the normal display state.

Changing the appearance of a widget

About this task

You can change the title, color trim, and background color of a widget.

Procedure

  1. To edit the appearance of a widget, open the widget menu, and click Appearance. You can change the following aspects of a widget:
    • Title: A default title is provided with each widget, but you might want to modify the title to reflect the customized content and settings of the widget. You can restore the widget's default title at any time by clicking the Restore default title icon (Restore default title) in the field.
    • Color trim: You can color-coordinate widgets based on their content and the intent of your dashboard. The last choice in the list is no trim, which is useful for the HTML widgets where free-form HTML can be used in various creative ways.
    • Show Background Color: Indicates whether the trim color fills the entire background of a widget.
Tip: Background color can help to organize a page that has many widgets. For example, you can use a background color on a single widget to make it stand out from other widgets on a page, or you can use the same background color for related widgets to visually group them on the page.
  2. When you are finished modifying the widget's appearance, click OK, and then click Save to store the changes and return to the normal display state.

Changing the scope of a widget

About this task

Some widgets are sensitive to the context in which they display (scope). For example, the Plans widget shows different content when displayed in the project dashboard than in the team dashboard. Scope setting is automatically computed based on the dashboard but can be overridden in the Scope tab.

Procedure

  1. To change this setting, open the widget menu, and click Settings.
  2. Click Select next to the scope field to open the Select Scope window.
Note: Only widgets that are sensitive to the scope display this preference.
  3. Select Project and Team Areas or Users.
    • If you select Project and Team Areas, then select a project or team area from the populated list.
    • If you select Users, then search for a user by entering characters in the filter field or by clicking Show All. Only the first 250 matching user names are displayed in the Matching users box, which might require you to add more characters.
  4. Click OK to set the scope, click OK in the widget, and then click Save to save the new settings.
