Opening a shared solution is very slow

Yaron Norani (47267065) | asked Dec 21 '11, 9:01 a.m.
Hi,

We are using RTC 3.0 IFIX1 with VS 2005.
All solutions are shared in RTC (binding is jazz).

When we open a solution is takes several minutes until Visual Studio is up and running.
We have tried to remove the solution share (no binding). Now opening a solution is very fast.

How to deal with that?

Thanks,

Yaron

Hello Yaron,
Did it degrade with the iFix? Did you have the same solution open with 3.0 and was that faster?
If a solution is shared, we start tracking it when you open it - so it will be a bit slower than an unshared solution, but I've not seen this delay to be very noticeable.
Are there many files open in the solution to start with, from your last session? Does the solution open time get impacted by the number of open files? Or the file types that are open?
Are you opening the solution by double clicking on it? Or are you setting the sandbox first and then opening a solution in the sandbox? Is there a difference in the open time between these two cases?

Cheers

Hello Rupa,

I have not degraded with a IFIX.
All information is relevant for RTC3.0 IFIX1.
I have a shared solution that contains about 120 projects.
The problem occurs when opening this solution.
After removing the bindings (share) opening the same solution is fast.

It might that there are also source and header files that remained open from last session.
I am not sure whether it affects the opening time.

I am opening the solution by double click on it.

Can you create a test environment similar to mine?
RTC3.0IFIX1, VS2005, Solution with about 120 projects.

Thanks,

Yaron

Hi Yaron,

We'll try recreating it. We'd need some more information - what types are your projects? All sorts of types or just some specific types? Have you tried opening it from the Sandbox History node? Could you try to just open VS 2005 and then go to the Sandboxes node, click on the sandbox that parents your solution and set it as the current one? It'll prompt you to open a solution. Is this slow as well?

Cheers

Hi Rupa,

I have some progress with that.
I have checked and found the following:

Please see the following:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/vbide/thread/e66d7bab-ec64-48a7-b003-3e136665395b/

Following our tests -
It looks like the problem is from the VS side: The problem "Adds projectSection for all projects" should be fixed in Visual Studio 2008.

I have removed those lines from the solutions and It works faster.
