LDAP Realm federation and Tomcat

I am looking at creating a RTC setup with federated LDAP realms, similar as explained in http://jazz.net/library/article/604#ldap-hybrid-directory but in this case using Tomcat as an application server.
However as far as I can see Tomcat would only allow this in the more recent versions (E.g. Tomcat 6.0) Unfortunately RTC makes use of Tomcat 5.3 which doesn't offer this capability.

Is there a possibility to use Tomcat 6.0 or later for RTC?

Is there any other solution to use a federated LDAP with Tomcat. One option I could think of is to setup an LDAP as proxy to other LDAP servers (Eg Openldap would offer this capability)?

Tomcat 6.0 is not currently supported, we are considering adding it for the next release (proposed).

Tomcat 7 is now released. Any plans for Tomcat 7? And any ideas as to when a Tomcat 6 release may be available?

I am also waiting for higher version tomcat running jazz. I am using tomcat 7 in our project.

I try to configure the setting to run jazz in tomcat7. However, getting ssl problem (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) makes me trouble.

I am using 64 bit window server with 64 bit java1.7.
