Project areas and team areas cannot be deleted but they can be archived.
The UI elements then allow filtering to show or not show archived areas.

To archive:
Open the Team Organization view.
Within the view, right click on any project area or team area>Archive...

To rename a team area:
Right click on the team area>Open
Within the Team Area Editor, change the name by editing within the top
text field
Save using Ctrl-S or clicking on the Save

In M6, Right Click on a Team Area or Project Area>Rename...

By design project areas and team areas cannot be deleted. You can
archive them so the are not visible (they basically becomes dormant
though you can still access the content). Archiving is available from
the Team Organization view.

You can rename a team area from the Team Organization view.
