We have a need where a set of people required access to information that is stored in our repository. However, this information is a small set of the overall repository. The information is stored in a unique work item type.

How can we allow them read access to the work item type only?

We will have functionality in 3.0, that will allow you to restrict read
access to specific work items. It is also planned to eventually enable
this by work item type:
