jazz work item status update from new to cancelled is not working

I am working on work-item update status rest api call using Spring Rest api. I have set all mandatory fields(in rootcause tab) and tried to modify status to Cancelled using below rest api call (by passing _action query param in PUT method)

https://<server>/ccm/resource/itemName/<workitem>/290776?_action=com.ibm.team.workitem.defectWorkflow.action.startWorking  

other than defect status, all attributes are updated as expected.but defect status dropdown is still in New status.But  in history tab,state change history shows "New->Cancelled". Some one help me to  resolve this issue.
