Is there a simple transition by just installing CLM 6.0.3 on a clean windows server 2012 environment and then connecting to existing Oracle database that was used for CLM 5.0.2?

Upgrade from Ration CLM 5.0.2 to 6.0.3 windows environment using Oracle 11 database. Currently we clone our server to upgrade versions, VM environment, and then perform a lengthy rename process before upgrading.

No for your answer. Your current strategy seems sound.

The only other way would be to just do an install and upgrade on the server without cloning. (skipping the rename).

If you plan to cut users over to the new environment, you could also clone and do the upgrade using DNS host aliases and ultimately a network DNS change to make the old Fully Qualified Domain Name point to the new servers.  No rename would be required.

CLM data is intrinsically tied to the FQDN that was done during the first setup, and there are data differences between 5.x and 6.x that require they undergo the upgrade process (it can actually take days if you have a lot of module baselines in DNG).  The data must move through the upgrade scripts, and it either must think it is on the same servers/found at the same FQDN or go through the somewhat risky rename process.
