Having the module open. Select the view you want to have as default. Click edit and check the checkbox "Make this a prefered view"

^What do you mean by a 'starred view' ?

What effect does 'preferred' have?

If I make a view 'preferred' it just seems to make it appear with bold text in the view list.

Is there any other benefit to making a view 'preferred' ?

Note that a "preferred" view is not quite the same as a default view.  It's more like a "starred" view.  Typically, the module will remember and use the same view you used the last time you were in the module.
