RTC work item "Description" Bulk edit option

Mohanraj Ragupathi (54519) | asked Oct 15 '15, 1:06 a.m.
We are using RTC 502.

We have a big program which have multiple variants handled by different team. And each team have sub-team (handles particular features or subsystems).

When there is a change request from customer and logged as "story / Epic" in RTC, to estimate the effort to implement this feature, we used to create "Task" for each team members who have impact.

To create this "Story" and child "Task", we have created a template with "default" description and summary. So click on a button, the "Story" and "Tasks" for each team will be created.

Once it is created, the lead engineer want to edit and update all "Story" and "Task" -Description field using "Bulk edit" option. The user is able to edit the "summary" but not "Description". How to do this? Or is there any other way to do this?

Whenever you find yourself copying the same data to multiple places, you are introducing the risk of someone changing the wrong copy of the data, and then getting those changes overwritten.   It would be better to train your users to look to the parent Story for the overall description of what they are doing, and have the Task description be the subset of that work that is being done by that particular individual.

 Hi Mohanraj,

you can configure the description field display to be "read only". Using the work item interface you can't edit the field, but using the "bulk edit" it is possible.

It isn't a perfect solution, since the user can edit the description using the bulk edit too, but it is pretty easy to configure and I believe that solves your problem. If you want to implement a 100% solution to your problem, maybe you want to look to some customization, such as advisors.
