Child Work Item records disappearing from Backlog Plan

Michael Walker (99215201157) | asked Jun 30 '09, 7:33 p.m.
I created a Product Backlog Plan and added an Enhancement Work Item, which is a top-level Work Item. I then went into the Work Item record and selected to Link to New Work Item. I then created a Task Work Item as a child record to the Enhancement record. I did this for 3 different Tasks.

When I view the Backlog in the Work Breakdown view I can see the child Work Items, but when I refresh they disappear and only the Enhancement Work Item remains. If I modify one of the Task Work Items and Save it will re-appear, but then disappear again once I refresh.

I tried editing the Work Breakdown view, but didn't find anything that would make them appear permanently. I seem to remember in one of the Betas that there was an easier way to create the child Task work items and they would stay on the screen.

Am I creating these child records correctly? I'm using the GA version of RTC 2.0.

As Geoff stated, work items with unsaved changes are not filtered on the
plan, thus they disappear upon save.

To create the work breakdown, I recommend you to use the plan editor;
you can simply create new work items using the context menu or
Ctrl-Enter; the parent-child relationship is established using the
promote/demote actions (tab/shift-tab).

the "Effective Planning" article (http://jazz.net/library/article/197)
is a good read for background information on how to best use the Planned
Items page of a plan. The article also contains descriptions of the
filters and other settings mentioned by Geoff.

Thanks for the help. I had to go into the Project Area's Process Configuration and make the Task work item a Top-Level work item type.

Once I did that the Tasks appeared as children under the Work Breakdown view.

I was also confused at first by this disappearing work items.

I believe the explanation is as follows:

You are allowed to create a child work item of any type in any plan.
But then when you "refresh" the plan, it filters out all of the work
item types that are not declared as ones that should be visible in that
type of plan.

If you "edit" your plan, you'll see that one of the things you can
specify is which types of items are shown in that plan (and you'll find
that "Task" is not selected for your plan ... select it, and the next
time you refresh your plan, those child Tasks will show up).

Cheers,
Geoff
