Is it possible to add some default text into a editor presentation component i.e within a Task work item can we place some text into the description editor eg example headings. So the user has some idea when the work item is created what to write in that section

I can see that one method would be to create editor presentation extension but that seems a little heavy handed.

There is currently no such option. It sounds like a variant of the request
to define default values for attributes. Please see:
