Can we have a custom Work Item type within which different Work Items be embedded and each of them with their respective workflows?

We are trying to configure a custom work item type which will be a super work item kind.
In that work item we will embed few, lets say, "Task" work items ("Links" not to be used).
And each of those, work Items, e.g. Task,  should follow their respective workflows.

So, this is a kind of implementation of nested structure of Work Items.

Is it possible?
If yes, then could someone provide an insight.

What from a user's perspective would the difference between an "embedded" work item, and a work item that is connected via a "Child" link?

No.. the system assumes workitems are all at the same level.  nesting is a logical description.. parent/child, story/task (using the scrum template) .

and Links are used the establish those relationships.
