Can an attribute be reset to unassigned on a certain action going into another state ?

We have an attribute configured mandatory for certain state. But if it is set prior to getting pushed into that state, it is not forced to be set anew with a value. We wonder if there is a way, let say on "reopen", it can be reset to unasigned, so it is forced to be set with a value again when it reach the required state.
