If you are entering a number in the quick search it will go for the id... but if you escape it it will search everywhere except the id.
I escape it with / e.g looking for 4.3 I write /4.3
you can escape with other char but I do not remember them by hart

It is also possible to quote the numeric string. We have bridge that brings in developerWorks RFE which have numeric id. Typing in an RFE ID might show the wrong work item, or none. Quoting the value does the trick.
