I am running RTC 4.0.3
i'd like to have different "versions" of a work item of type task.
i need to have a preliminary, draft and final "version" of a task....the same task
is that possible in RTC or must I have 3 different tasks one for prelim, draft and final?

You will need to explain what you are going to be doing with these 3 tasks, and then what would be the downside of just having 3 tasks.

You can customize the workflow in such a way that the task will be initially in the prilim state and then move draft state and so on.
Not just that you will be able to customize which all attributes are mandatory in certain state.
The history will show the audit trail for the same so you can see how the task evolved over time.
