How to populate data using Create Link button (RTC 4.0.3)

Charis Davenport (111) | asked Sep 26 '13, 7:17 p.m.

We are now on RTC 4.0.3 and would like information on how to auto-populate information from a parent work item onto the new child item when using the Create Linked button. Is there an easy way to do this in the latest RTC version without extensive development experience? Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Charis,
Can you clarify what data exactly you want to populate? There are two functions in RTC which might help you: Create workitem copy and create from template. You can create number of prefilled templates and then just find them in the dialog for which you have provided screen snapshot (no need to use Create Linked Story button)

Let us know if it helps you.

Thank you for the reply. For example, we have a company-wide application that contains an ID. We are auto-importing records, which includes the unique ID, from that system into RTC for more granular life-cycle management. Every record (task, story, request, pcr, risk etc) has a field for that external ID which links back to the original request. So when a user goes to create a child story from the imported main request record, we want that ID copied automatically to the new linked record. There are other field values like Summary, Risk, ROM, Priority, etc from the parent request that we also want copied over. These are unique for each request, so a template would not work. I will open an Enhancement request per Dinesh's suggestion. We may need to hire a developer through our IBM contacts if it needs to be a custom build. Thanks again.

To my knowledge we don't have anything on this OOTB, you will need to develop your operation advisors to do it.

Ralph's post : http://rsjazz.wordpress.com/2012/07/31/rtc-update-parent-duration-estimation-and-effort-participant/
has a similar or rather an converse use case addressed with all the sample code explained in detail. This I believe this would be a good place to start with with.

You could additionally raise an enhancement request so that the functionality is reviewed for implementation in the product.  The place to raise the request would be :

I'm not aware of functionality to allow this in the Web client (as at v4.03) but it would be useful.

In the Eclipse Client (v3.0.1.1 and beyond) there is a Duplicate function that will do what you want. Click on the ticket header and select 'Duplicate' in the context menu that results. You are then presented with a list of the populated fields in your ticket you can elect to copy over in to your new ticket.

The result is 2 tickets that Mention one another and have relation type 'Copies / Copied From' (although this seems to be the wrong way round in Eclipse 3.0.1.1).

An enhancement request to have the 'Duplicate' and 'Extract Work Item' Eclipse functionality also available in the Web Client would be v. handy.
