The workitem has a customized tab called "APAR", which contains the information like "APAR#", "APAR State", "Repeatability", "APAR Resolution", etc.
When I try to search the item using "APAR#" through full text search, it returns nothing.  But if I create a query, check on "show custom", add the condition with the APAR# and then run the query (in eclipse client),  it returns the results with the work item which has that APAR#.

So the question is, does full text search support custom attributes?

I was looking for similar information, this is a very good question :)

There is a note in the following article which answers your question
"Note: It is not possible to query for text in custom attributes as all text-based search is done via the Full Text search option."

Additional information on search:
I found this tech note with more information on what the Search does, but was written for 3.x
