Jazz API to retrieve work items?

I haven't had a chance to look around at Jazz extensibility and availability of data via an API, so I am hoping someone can point me to a quick way to do this. I'd like to be able to call some API (via web service, or Java method call) to retrieve a filtered set of work items (filter may be anything that's currently filterable in work items). How does one go about accomplishing this?

I'm also interested in a quick way of doing this. Given a project area and a work item id I would like to retrieve a work item and append a comment via the java API.
