Alias's for custom work item types

Sean Burke (3789137237) | asked May 14 '13, 12:42 p.m.
I am creating a custom work item type and there is a field for "alias".  Could some example how an alias would be used.  I understand that it is a short name that identifies the work item but where could this be used?

Aliases get used to help create links between work items.  So lets assume that we are using a work item type of defect for our defects, and we also give it an alias of "bug".  Now when a user types the following in a discussion:

"This looks a lot like bug 3423, except the IP address is different."

a link will automatically be created in the discussion, so that people looking at either work item will be able to tell that they make references to each other.

Hi Sean,  From the following article:
https://jazz.net/library/article/565/
"Aliases allow for links to be easily created between work items. For example, if the term 'defect' is an alias for the Defect work item type then mentioning 'defect 123' in a work item will create a link from that item to Defect 123."

As far as I know, aliases are used across the repository (not only within the project area where the aliases are defined).
