Error on attempt to view large backlog plan ?

RTC 4.0.1, Users reported issues viewing plans yesterday and I traced it to "Invalid Plan View" in the project configuration.  Yet there is still one backlog that throws this:

Plan can be viewed in Eclipse Client.  Says there are 10995 completed and 1245 in-progress work items along with the mention of the 2048 work items warning.

A similar defect ("this.fDeltaBuilder is null"):
[4.0.2 Backport 248599 ] Setting the Planned for of the workitem throws error if plan layout has Accumulated Time (Read Only) column (248916)

I noticed that, but didn't feel that it applied as the activity was simply viewing the plan in the Web UI.

Another thing:  The plan has amost 11,000 closed work items, 1250 open and is configured to "load all items"

I don't think this is related to plan view, just it's so darn big.  I tried for 2h to get the plan to load turning away firefox and IE attempts to stop the running script.  No luck.
I have suggested to plan owners to set "load all items" off.
