All,
I enquired with the IBM Rational management at a recent DOORS customer day at Warwick and was put in touch with Sodius.com who have an eclipse based dxl editor. I am evaluating now and it has some neat features for comparison, debugging etc. It is also possible to execute the dxl from within the editor and the output is displayed within eclipse rather than the DOORS DXL output window. They are looking for feedback on the dxl addin.
Regards

Hi Mark,
I went onto Sodius.com but can't see any kind of trial plugin on offer or actually anything to do with DXL.
Is this only on a individual request basis?
Thanks.

Yes, we haven't updated our site yet, but we currently have a beta release of an eclipse-based IDE for DXL. The release is scheduled for September, but if you are interested in being a beta tester, please send me an email.

Your IDE is really a great leap forward! Thanks for this DXLEditor. Are there any plans to integrate a DXL debugger in the future?
Best regards
D.

Great timing for this question. The debugger is currently in beta testing and will be generally available in about 2 weeks. It allows you to set breakpoints, run step-by-step, inspect variables, and evaluate expressions during execution - directly in the eclipse debug view. It also links the DOORS DXL help in eclipse so you can browse help while you code, and even copy and paste directly from it.
I can send you a product sheet if you'd like more info, and keep checking http://www.dxleditor.com for the official release.
Thanks!

Hi,

I think that really depends on the time you spend developing DXL. If your productivity increases by 10% you spend 800h (1/2 of your time) a year developing DXL, that will be 80h you save, multiplied by the hourly rate you charge, e.g. 50$ that would be 4000$ cost reduction for you/your clients. For fulltime DXL developers I think this is really an option.

Mathias, I am a full time DXL Developer, and given that I have for many years now had to work without a debugger, I have learnt to work in such a way that my designs are implemented in a progressive manner where functionality is added to a know working baseline, using known working libraries.
I do not believe that this toolset would provide me such an increase in productively, and as such I cannot justify the cost of purchasing the license.

Point taken. For sure the productivity increase depends on the skills of the programmer and the complexity of the implementations. Mathias

Thanks Pierre for pointing out that we have not changed anything about the editor pricing - it is free and will always remain free. However we have invested a great deal of resources in adding the debugging features, for which it would have been impossible to do so for free as well. I would suggest that you try the free evaluation of the debugger to see just how much time it saves you. I believe you will be amazed at the integration with the Eclipse debugging environment.
Also note that we have discounted the price for the introduction period.

Let me first say that I recognise the investment and effort that is involved in the developement of such a tool, however, I cannot help but feel that you are simply asking too much for the License (DXL Editor Pro version).
For me, it should not have been left to a third party to develope such an environment at all! DOORS is provided such that it is completely dependent upon the development of DXL, and as such this kind of environment should be provided by the Tool Vendor (IBM / Telelogic).

Roy, as you said above, you've organized yourself to not need a debugger, so any price is too high for a product you don't need.
We've simply tried to provide a product to help the other users from going through these same contortions, and therefore to increase their productivity. I'm sure for those who need this functionality, the price is easily justifiable against the gain in productivity and quality.
We can't speak for IBM as to why they didn't provide this already, but we just wanted to continue our support for our customers as best we can.

Agreed!
By virtue of the high levels of engagement on the IBM and past Telelogic DXL forums it is obvious that many customers revert to DXL to not only create custom functionality but also to overcome a lack of features that should have been built-in to the DOORS executable as out of the box features. So if we have to use DXL to make DOORS sing and dance, the least that could be done is for the tool to have an adequate out of the box DXL IDE.
Microsoft supplies a built-in VBA IDE for it's MSOffice product - why shouldn't DOORS include the equivalent for DXL? Perhaps the people writing the executable code for DOORS should try and do it without an IDE for a while.
