Rational Team Concert for System z 2.0.0.1 - New and Noteworthy

Here are some of the more noteworthy things in the Rational Team Concert for System z 2.0.0.1 release added since the 1.0.1 release (December 2008).

Licensing

New Editions Rational Team Concert for System z now supports two new editions: a Starter Edition for teams getting started with Rational Team Concert for System z and an Enterprise Edition for large organizations. These new versions, along with the existing Standard Edition, provide support for all platforms including:
  • Platforms supported by Rational Team Concert V2.0.0.1 including Windows, Linux, AIX, and Solaris
  • z/OS
  • Linux for System z

WebSphere Application Server 7.0 entitlement Each valid license of a Standard or Enterprise edition of Team Concert now includes a license to run one instance of WebSphere Application Server 7.0. Additionally, each valid license of an Enterprise edition of Team Concert includes a license to run an additional instance of WebSphere Application Server 7.0 in a high availability configuration. For the z/OS environment, WebSphere Application Server OEM V7 is provided. For all other platforms WebSphere Application Server V7 is provided.

Host Source Code Management (SCM) coexistence support

New Jazz Gateway The new Jazz Gateway is provided to simplify integration with existing host based SCMs. This function was specifically developed to allow simple REXX programs or any other exit to call the gateway to get information about the work item status without having to understand or make REST calls. The gateway has been developed with the knowledge of the REST interface and the security required.

z/OS file linking Data sets on z/OS can now be directly linked within work items. When using an existing host-based SCM, there is a need to reference source items or other host-based artifacts in the discussion. Links can be provided within the source to work items that reference the change. These links require the use of IBM® Rational® Developer for System z along with Rational Team Concert for System z.

Work item linking to PDS

New Rational Build Agent Rational Team Concert for System z now includes the IBM® Rational® Build Forge® agents called the Rational Build Agents, which are integrated with the team server to provide additional build capabilities. With these new agents, build definitions can be created to call existing host build facilities or job control language (JCL). This allows centralized control and reporting of build across the environment, including z/OS. In addition to providing the new agents, the agent for z/OS has been integrated with the job monitor capability to provide proper job submission and monitoring.

Source Control

z/OS File Agent z/OS File Agent extends the capabilities of the SCM command line to support z/OS data sets. Files can now be extracted to PDS/Es for use for build or for integration with Rational Developer for System z. The file agent handles the conversion to the appropriate EBCDIC code page.

Data Set Definition Data set definitions can be created in your project area to describe PDS/Es that will be populated with members in the Jazz SCM or used by your Antz build.

Data Set Definition

Mass Import An additional tool is provided to import existing source from data sets into the SCM. This tool provides the ability to specify which files to import based on naming standards and creates the appropriate zComponent projects and data set definitions.

Build

JCL Build Using the new Rational Build Agent integrated with the job monitor, existing JCL can be submitted and properly monitored for build jobs. This JCL can exist on the z/OS system or it can be pulled from the SCM for submission. The results of the build will be returned in the build map.

Antz Build A new build capability called Antz, based on Apache's Ant with additional extensions for the z/OS environment is provided. Build support can be combined with the distributed build using Antz. Antz provides full capabilities to build any z/OS related artifacts. Antz works with the new zComponent project structure, the data set definitions and the new language definitions to provide z/OS build.

Build Overview tab

Language Definition Language definitions allow build administrators to define the compilers, compiler options, and steps required for each different language part. For example, a DB2 pre-compile step can be specified before the actual compile. These language definitions are used both for the Antz build and for the integration with Rational Developer for System z.

IDE support

Rational Developer for System z New integration is provided with Rational Developer for System z. This provides support for RDz remote projects, in addition to the local project support that was already available. With the remote project support, users can select members from the Rational Team Concert for System z SCM for work within their z/OS subprojects. Similar to the selection of artifacts from other SCMs when files are selected, they are loaded into the appropriate PDS on z/OS and added to the z/OS subproject for interaction. Similarly, new files created in a z/OS subproject can be shared in the Rational Team Concert for System z SCM.

Rational Developer for System z support

Team Debug Collaborative debugging with Rational Developer for System z and the IBM Debug Tool is now provided with Rational Team Concert for System z. This means that you can transfer debug sessions to other team members within Rational Team Concert, save debugging sessions for later retrieval, and share breakpoints and monitors with other team members.

Process

z/OS focused process template An updated Scrum template has been developed that is designed for the additional requirements of a z/OS development team. This updated template provides additional process control, a new role for the build administrator, and updated Scrum definition to support the levels of development found within z/OS organizations.
