Getting started with Design Management 5.0.2

About the download: IBM® Installation Manager deploys a Jazz Team Server as well as the Design Management capabilities. You can install Design Management onto its own, separate Jazz Team Server or you can install Design Management onto an existing, shared Jazz Team Server that includes the full set of Rational® solution for Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) capabilities.

There are three ways to integrate the Design Management capabilities with Rational Team Concert, Rational Quality Manager, and Rational DOORS Next Generation:

  • (Standard approach) In IBM Installation Manager, add both the CLM and Design Management repositories to the preferences, and then install the CLM and Design Management installation packages at the same time.
  • Install Collaborative Lifecycle Management, and then install Design Management into the same package group.
  • Install Design Management, and then install Collaborative Lifecycle Management into the same package group.

To explore the Design Management capabilities only, download Design Management from the All Downloads tab. This option installs Design Management with its own Jazz Team Server.

You can use Rational Rhapsody for systems and embedded software engineers.

1
Plan and prepare

For known issues with this release, see the release notes.

For supported platforms and memory requirements, see the system requirements.

To get started quickly with a small deployment by using the default topology and Apache Derby databases, go to the next step and install the server. Apache Derby deployments are limited to 10 users and do not support cross-domain reports.

For advanced deployments, first read the Interactive Installation Guide to plan your deployment. Then, visit the Optional Programs page to obtain programs such as DB2® or WebSphere® Application Server.

Upgrading: If you plan to upgrade an existing deployment, see the Upgrading page.

2
Install the server and applications

To perform a web installation of the server, download the web installer for your platform (see the previous section), extract the .zip file, and start the launchpad (launchpad.exe or launchpad.sh, depending on your platform). The server includes Apache Derby to support up to 10 users. To enable more than 10 users, install DB2 or another supported database program.

If you need to install the server in an environment without access to the Internet, visit the All Downloads page, download a repository for the server and trial licenses, and install by using IBM Installation Manager.

Note: During the installation process, you have the option to install different applications. You do not have to install all of them; you can install only a subset of the applications. These options are for advanced installation scenarios, such as distributing the applications across multiple servers or deploying multiple applications of the same type within an application group.

Note: Extract the contents of the downloaded .zip files into same location and ensure that the utility does not create any subfolders during the extraction process (some utilities create new subfolders by default). If subfolders are created during this process, you cannot continue the installation and setup process.

For information about installing and managing client access licenses (CALs), see Managing client access licenses.

3
Set up the server

After the installation, complete the steps in the Jazz Team Server setup wizard, which is available at https://fully_qualified_host_name:9443/jts/setup (where fully_qualified_host_name is the domain for your server).

Additional guidance: For help with the setup wizard, see Setting up and configuring the Design Management Server in the information center.

4
Install optional client extensions

The Rational Software Architect Extension for Design Management and the Rational Rhapsody Extension for Design Management provide design editing capabilities that you can use with the Design Management Server. You can use the extensions to edit, search, view, collaborate on, and link to designs from within Rational Software Architect versions 8.0.4.1 and later and Rational Rhapsody version 8.0 and later.

For instructions on how to install the Rational Software Architect Extension for Design Management, see the associated help topic. To learn how to connect Rational Software Architect with the Design Management Server, see the associated help topic.

For instructions on how to install the Rational Rhapsody Extension for Design Management, see the associated help topic. To learn how to connect Rational Rhapsody with the Design Management Server, see the associated help topic.
