Running 9.2 and 9.6 clients with 9.6 server

Our team is upgrading to DOORS 9.6 (from 9.2).

To minimized the impact on production, the team has decided to perform this upgrade in two stages...  Stage 1 is to upgrade the DOORS server to 9.6. Stage 2 is to upgrade the DOORS clients 9.6.

The IBM DOORS documentation clearly states that any  9.x (9.2) clients are compatible with any 9.x (9.6) server however it is silient on an environment where there is a mix of 9.x (9.2 and 9.6) clients.  Of particular concern is the situation where a single module being accessed in sharable-mode by multiple users having different versions of DOORS clients.

So the question to the DOORS community here is ...  has anyone encountered issues in maintaning a mix environment of 9.2 and 9.6 (or 9.x) clients.

This should not be a problem. There are no known issues arising from a mixture of 9.2 and 9.6 clients connecting to a 9.6 server.

You should be fine, one thing I found out last week is that unless you set your DOORS server properties to only accept DOORS clients 9.4 and higher you won't have the maximum number of columns in a view up to 128 available to you. I was perplexed because I read the release notes that said 9.4 allows 128 columns instead of 30 and I have 9.5... but I'm glad I figured it out so just in case you are wondering why something doesn't work as advertised this might be a reason.
