DOORS 9.6.x Client Not Supported on Windows Server

The official IBM support position is that DOORS 9.6.x Client is not supported on any Windows Server platforms.

This has been the case for some time so there are no platforms which support both DOORS Client and DOORS Server.

I am engaged in a corporate deployment which may involve deploying DOORS client on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise in a Citrix farm configuration. The DOORS client will then be published as a Citrix app and be accessible from Windows 7 desktops.

Does anybody know of any such similar corporate deployment where an unsupported server platform is used to publish the client from a Citrix farm? You don't have to name names but if you can give an indication of deployment scale it would be useful.

Thanks.

Where did you read that this is the case (cannot install client on Windows Server 2008 R2)?

http://www-969.ibm.com/software/reports/compatibility/clarity-reports/report/html/softwareReqsForProduct?deliverableId=1386338636857&osPlatforms=Windows

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Hi Bill,

That page indicates that Win7 is the only supported platform for the DOORS 9.6.1.x client

It will install OK on the other platforms but there is no support.

Weird thing is that even though on the compatibility report for DOORS says DOORS client only supports Win7 machine and does not support any Win server machine, DWA which uses DOORS client (in interop mode) supports Win server machines....

On the Knowledge center, it says that Rational DOORS is supported on Citrix XenApp 6.0 on Windows 2008 Server Standard and Enterprise Edition (32 bit and 64 bit). So yea, I think it would work.

So yea, I'm confused but I think it would work fine...

Yes, but DWA is not exclusively a DOORS tool. It is used for many other applications e.g. System Architect (which also has client support on the Server platforms)

What I wanted to say is DOORS interop which DWA uses and is essentially the same as DOORS client and DWA supports 2008.

So you should use 2008 as KC says.

Yes, that is true.

I had not thought of that.

However, DOORS Interop runs without an interface so maybe that is the distinction, but that is still a bit strange as you say.

Still don't know how you're reading the page at the link I gave. DOORS client is supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 (which is what you want). It is not (yet?) supported on Windows Server 2012 (which is not an issue for you).

At the moment we are still running 9.5.2.1 clients in a Citrix Farm running Windows Server 2008 R2 with approx 400 end users from around the world and are testing latest 9.6 version on the same setup in our Dev/Test environment and expect to go live on that soon.

I think what is throwing people is the format of the table on that page. Important thing is the Notes column not the Components (which seems redundant IMHO as it is describing the OS as being Desktop/Server and not the DOORS software itself).

If you want to be safe then contact your IBM account manager. I would be surprised if there was a problem.

That page shows 2 platforms supported for DOORS client - both are Win 7

The server component is supported on several server platforms.

No platforms support both client and server

No server platform supports DOORS client

If you pursue it with support then you might find that the client platform list changes if you run the client through Citrix (as you are doing) so your platform becomes supported.

Hi Sean, DOORS is supported on a Citrix environment and as you know that is usually installed on some Microsoft Windows Server environment. So I'm curious if you have tried contacting DOORS support to see exactly what environment is a Citrix DOORS deployment supported on? The support team can work with development to get you these details. It could be possible that you've encountered a documentation defect.

Generally Citrix has only the DOORS client and points to a nearby server dedicated to housing the DOORS service.  That Service can be v96 but the DOORS client on that server need not be; who cares if you get sub-optimal bells-and-whistles on the emergency client.  v96 DOORS clients go on the various Citrix servers.
