LMTools - Licensing Server Occasionally Crashes

Our development uses DOORS and we've been having a problem with the licensing server occasionally crashing. Due to this, I have a few different questions I'm hoping this forum may be able to help answer.

1) Is there a way to automate the license server starting back up after it crashes? If the server ran as a service this would be easy to do but since it appears to run as a process I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

2) How can I setup a check to see whether or not the process is currently running? I'd like to setup a system to alert IT any time the server stops running.

3) How would I go about investigating the root cause of this issue to prevent the server from crashing in the future?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • I've only ever seen the License Server, FlexLM, as a service.
  • You can set up different levels of logging, and it should tell you why its crashing.
  • Seems to me I had some luck with the DOS "telnet" command to see if a port@server is active as opposed to just available.
  • if telnet or other methods fail, another brute force method would be to have a task that starts DOORS, and closes it if successful and emails if unsuccessful, then schedle that on a client to run every 10 minutes.
  • Until someone who knew what she was doing would help me, I'd adopt a brute force method of restarting the service: write a task that starts the license service, and use Scheduled Tasks to run it every minute.
